A free exhibition to commemorate Oxford during the First World War. Touring to five venues between November 2018 and July 2019:
Somerville College, Oxford – 1 to 29 November 2018 (weekdays 2.00-5.30pm, Saturdays 9.30-11.30am)
The Rumble Museum, Cheney School, Headington – 1 to 20 December 2018
Cowley Library, Oxford – 22 December 2018 to 30 January 2019
Westgate Library, Oxford – 1 to 28 February 2019
The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock – 19 March to 31 July 2019

While some citizens left Oxford and travelled to other countries during the First World War, others stayed behind and experienced the city’s increasingly international connections; individuals from across the UK and the world joined them here because of the conflict. All these people were involved in, and contributed to, the war in different ways, and twelve of them are commemorated in this exhibition which highlights the wartime experiences of men and women, be they ‘town’, ‘gown’, or from overseas. By focussing on individual stories the exhibition emphasises Oxford’s international connections during the First World War and helps to expand understanding of different types of war experiences beyond the trenches.

Dr Rob Johnson is giving a special lecture on “The Great War and the Middle East” on 24 November from 17.00-18.30 in the Harold Lee Room, Pembroke College. It will be followed by drinks.

Many of the most commonly accepted assertions about the First World War in the Middle East are more often stated than they are truly tested. Drawing on detailed research into the strategic and operational course of the war in the Middle East, Rob argues that, far from being a sideshow to the war in Europe, the Middle Eastern conflict was in fact the centre of gravity in a war for imperial domination and prestige. Moreover, contrary to another persistent myth of the First World War in the Middle East, local leaders and their forces were not simply the puppets of the Great Powers in any straightforward sense. The way in which these local forces embraced, resisted, succumbed to, disrupted, or on occasion overturned the plans of the imperialist powers for their own interests in fact played an important role in shaping the immediate aftermath of the conflict – and in laying the foundations for the troubled Middle East that we know today.

Wolvercote WW1 Aerodrome Memorial

The community project, Wolvercote WW1 Aerodrome Memorial, aims to establish a new memorial to 17 airmen who died in accidents associated with this WW1 aerodrome on Port Meadow. The project is a repository for photographs and information about Wolvercote Aerodrome and its WW1 heritage. Pembroke College has some affiliation with pilot training undertaken at the aerodrome, accommodating RFC/RAF cadets undergoing theoretical/ground based training at the No.2 School of Military Aeronautics, before a posting to a flying school such as Port Meadow.

The project’s latest development is the decision over an agreed memorial design and location. They have now commenced fund raising.

Their project Facebook page has an overview of the project and lots of other information.

A BBC WW1 At Home feature, entitled ‘Port Meadow Aerodrome, Oxfordshire: Challenges of Training with the Royal Flying Corps‘, was broadcast in June 2014. The casualty list has expanded slightly since then with two airmen identified who were killed near Ascot while on an official flight from Port Meadow.

Three Year Joint Pembroke-Torch Career Development Fellowship
WOMEN IN THE HUMANITIES

Pembroke College and The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities invite applications for a joint Pembroke-TORCH Career Development Fellowship in ‘Women in the Humanities’. This is a fixed-term appointment for three years. In addition to supporting outstanding early-career researchers who are working in any aspect of Women in the Humanities, the Fellowship aims to build an academic community of shared interests in the College. Accordingly, while the field of specialisation is open, preference may be given for proposals that complement the interests of Fellows in the College.

Special consideration for work within the following topics:
Global War, Revolution and Women’s Citizenship 1914-1919
Women, Literature and Culture of World War One
Women and Gender in Modern South Asia
Women and Gender in Modern Islam

The salary for this post will be in the range £32,277 to £35,256 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.

Closing date for applications is noon on Friday 3rd July 2015. Shortlisted candidates will be asked on 7th July to submit written work. It is anticipated that interviews will be held during the week beginning 13th July.
